Images that are ordered in a specific way with the aim of affecting the viewer’s emotions and intellect.

1. Careful Planning

Planning very important parts of visual storytelling, as it helps to visualize the story in mind. The planning process may include selecting the topic, doing research on the topic and planning the shots – they should be very diverse and visually appealing.

2. Single Shot VS Photo Series

“A single image is only a “semi-truth” because it’s impossible to tell everything in just one photograph.”

A single image might be very powerful but it’s still only a part of the bigger picture.

Perhaps looking onto a body of work - say 3 to 5 images per person or interview to create the story process. This may consist of images in different settings or angles in the same location.

3. Strong Emotions

  • Strong emotions are able to impact viewers and create a better engaged story. They can contain anything from a landscape to abstract visuals – the only thing that matters is that they can have an element that will be able to evoke emotions in the viewer.

4. Aiming For Variety In The Storytelling

  • Challenge the viewer’s imagination by offering them a variety of shots. Focusing on one kind of photograph won’t tell a whole story.

  • Pay attention to details and become flexible when it comes to your shooting style and aesthetic preferences.

5. Being Original

  • Keep things original and genuine in the collection of images.

  • Base the images around the person.

  • There are millions of images taken in the world and there has to be a way of changing them to appeal to a body of work that can set them apart.

  • Perhaps look into a style that can be replicated across all images.
